"Your art is REAL because it contains not only social commentary, but originality, humor, passion, intuition, human angst and the soul of an artist! It is NOT to be denied." Lee Wexler, M.F.A; Professor of Fine Arts, California State University, Los Angeles; Professor Emeritus. _____________________________________ Working from his secluded waterfront Studio in Whidbey Island, WA., Rochon feverishly unleashes his peculiarly volatile socio-political-philosophical views through life-sized, ornately detailed cartoon-like papier mache sculptures.

Killer Chicken - A Fowl Attitude

My latest Creature-ation - "Killer Chicken", was inspired by a tee shirt
worn by a customer that came into my gallery last summer (2005).

He told me that he had gotten his shirt while visiting an Arizona restaurant called CHUY's Baja Broiler, home of the Killer Chicken.

I instantly bonded with this chicken.  I mean how could you not love a surfboard riding chicken with a fowl attitude - now THAT cracks me up.

I contacted Chuy's and told them that I was going to create a sculpture of my vision of their wacked out chicken.  They asked me to show them the results when I was done.  Well, here it is, from start to finish.

I hope that you enjoy KILLER CHICKEN as much as I have enjoyed bringing him to life.

Carving and Rough Taping the Assorted Chicken Parts.

Chicken is hard wired into the surfboard for added strength.
Notice the upward tip of the board accomplished with a very hot blow dryer and lots of patience.

2-3 Coats of Papier Mache painstakingly applied (about 15 hours)

3 Additional coats of PVA (white glue) and carpenters glue for additional strength are hand brushed allowing 24 hours drying time in between coats.

2 coats of Gesso, a chalk like primer coat are brushed on.

Finally - the really fun part - painting.
Appoximately 30 hours of acrylic painting went into this piece.

The final piece gets 2 final brushed coats of Polycrylic sealer which not only protects the work but brings out the vibrancy of the color and details.

A special mounting bracket has been built-in to the back of the surfboard whereas KC appears to come out of the wall.

What's next?
What will pop into my mind that screams out to be born.
This is what I love about my medium - whatever it is that I can conceive - it can come to life.  The real question, is what will pop into my head?

Stay tuned.
